Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

by M.O.M. on November 24, 2009

Over the weekend I read that Jamie Oliver of Food Network fame (The Naked Chef) has a new show airing on ABC in 2010 called Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  Jamie’s philosophy is very similar to My Online Meals in three simple ways:  1) Planning your meals and your shopping trip ahead of time will save you time and money in the grocery store.  Some statistics show that planning ahead can save you as much as 40% on your grocery bill.  2) Pre-packaged, convenience food found at the grocery store is full of saturated fat, calories, sugar and sodium.  A reliance on these products results in unhealthy eating.  3) Even if you have the time to cook, lack of variety can lead you to the fast food lane.

A study conducted by a British grocery chain called Sainsbury concluded that many people buy the same stuff week after week, a syndrome they call “sleep shopping.”  Much of this food was either bad for you or lacked variation driving people to resort to takeout several nights a week to relieve the monotony.  Furthermore, they concluded that between 15% and 40% of our food ends up in the garbage.  What a waste of time and money!

There is an epidemic of obesity in the United States.  In fact, this is the first generation that is expected to live fewer years than their parents.  “Although nearly 75% of Americans eat dinner at home at least four nights a week,” many of these meals are comprised of pre-packaged foods, which are loaded with sugar, sodium and saturated fats, and are generally more expensive than cooking from scratch.

Many families are comprised of two working parents making it challenging to get dinner on the table.  Add to that the fact that many of our children are involved in after school activities requiring parents to split up chauffeuring duties from one activity to another.  It’s no wonder we rely on takeout and fast food for our week day dinners.  But, with a little help from MOM (My Online Meals) and some planning even the busiest family can reduce their reliance on takeout.

Introduce a concept like My Online Meals and you’ve got variety, healthy eating and cost savings in one.  The monthly subscription cost will be saved many times over by reducing food waste and cooking good healthy food at home.
